Thomas Tuchel Claims Top Talents Do Not Necessarily Make Up the Strongest Team

Thomas Tuchel has stated that putting together the most talented footballers does not guarantee building the best team unit. He hinted regardless of whether the Real Madrid midfielder had returned to peak fitness following his shoulder problem, the player could still have been omitted from the recent England squad.

Focus on Team Spirit

England's head coach further revealed that Bukayo Saka's return might not have occurred if his teammate Noni Madueke been available. Tuchel has placed significant emphasis on team cohesion in his selection for the forthcoming Wales friendly and subsequent qualifier against Latvia.

"We're creating the strongest squad," said the England boss, who challenged the conventional wisdom that World Cup winners typically choose their most dangerous forwards.

Previous Results

Tuchel pointed to the positive energy during last month's international break where the national team defeated Andorra and performed brilliantly versus the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. He saw no reason to alter the group dynamic which delivered such positive results.

  • Bellingham left out despite club comeback
  • Phil Foden omitted despite resurgence
  • Jack Grealish also was excluded

Physical Condition Factors

While Tuchel partially attributed Bellingham's absence to fitness concerns, he recognized that the player desired selection when they spoke. The German coach had earlier said sorry to the midfielder for comments about his on-field behavior.

"Don't you think that behavior from substitutes, support from training, and squad unity enables the starting eleven to play to their potential?" he questioned.

Team Choices Explained

The coach stressed that his decisions weren't individual against any player but rather rewarded those who had delivered during the previous international break.

"What would be my explanation dropping them while remaining credible with my statements?" he posed.

Injury Enforced Changes

The sole alteration to the squad was compulsory with the unfit Madueke being replaced by the recovered Saka. The manager explained that the Arsenal winger could have been excluded had Madueke remained fit.

Additional omissions included Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who continues to struggle with fitness issues. With only two more camps before the World Cup, opportunities are diminishing for certain individuals to prove themselves.

World Cup Scheduling Concerns

Tuchel expressed his desire for England's World Cup games to begin at later times because of temperature worries in North America. He acknowledged this might cause viewing difficulties for UK supporters but insisted player welfare remains the priority.

"I know supporters will not like it but for the team it's preferable with later kickoffs," Tuchel said. "Our athletes make the sport and we must safeguard them."
