Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals advised to remain inside as severe gales strike the country.

Powerful gales attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 homes without power and led officials to cancel over 100 flights, based on regional news sources.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in central regions such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further power and communication outages.

Broad Impact and Crisis Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing residences mainly in the South Island, although authorities state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in various locations homes have lost their roofs, and utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was blown onto oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a incident that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled because of the winds, and various routes and public facilities are shut down.

Simultaneously local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to support recovery activities.
