"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often depict them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The group are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"I love description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But the sister act will forever be their primary commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
